Talis was engaged by the City of Wanneroo to complete a desktop geotechnical Investigation at a former landfill facility located in Wangara.
The site, with an approximate area of 19 hectares, was formerly utilised as a sand mine until the 1980s when it was purchased by the City for use as a putrescible waste landfill. The site received both domestic and general waste between 1985 and 1989, following which the acceptance of putrescible waste ceased. The eastern portion of the site accepted inert waste until its closure in 1991 following which the whole site was capped by an inert sandy layer.
The objectives of the team’s investigation were to:
- Review available, but pertinent, information relating the site characteristics;
- Provide information on the geotechnical constraints of the site; and
- Identify what further investigations may be required.
Following the investigation, the Talis Environmental Services team advised the City that it could not consider the site to be geotechnically capable of supporting a proposed commercial/industrial development without further, more detailed investigations. Talis was subsequently engaged to undertake an intrusive investigation of the contamination and geotechnical status of the site.
