Talis Consultants was engaged by the Department of Environment and Conservation to undertake a waste data study within the Pilbara region and Shire of Broome. The project, managed by the Office of the Waste Authority, was to identify, capture and represent data from key waste streams (Municipal Solid Waste, Commercial & Industrial and Construction & Demolition) to inform planning and policy and improve waste management systems across the region.
As part of this process, Talis conducted a comprehensive desktop review of existing data and developed a Waste Classification System based on Australian and international systems. Talis undertook consultation with key stakeholders including local governments, resource companies and waste industry representatives to collect additional data, which was utilised for mapping waste generation and treatment in the region, and project growth for a period of 20 years.
Following on from the study, Talis assisted the Waste Authority and the Pilbara Development Commission to determine key waste priorities within the Pilbara including peak and problematic waste streams as well as infrastructure and market gaps.
